2001 - 2003

2003

1 January: Vienna Philharmonic New Year´s Concert 2003

For the first time in its history, Rieder Promotions had the honour of making a contribution to the world famous New Year´s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic which is annually broadcast in more than 40 countries. Inviting a foreign ballet company – in this case the Mariinsky Ballet – to partially participate in the ballet scenes was also a novelty. At the romantic Castle Eggenberg in Graz the dancers Andrey Mercuriev, Daria Pavlenko and Natalia Sologub took away the spectators breath in a choreography created by Boris Eifman.

February: Mariinsky Opera contributes to Cultural Capital of Europa Graz 2003

In 2003, Graz was not only Cultural Capital of Europe, but also celebrated its  850th anniversary. At the same time, St. Petersburg prepared for celebrations commemorating its 300th birthday. A three-week sumptuous Mariinsky tour with Valery Gergiev paid a more than worthy tribute to these festivities.

Four operas were on display: Domenico Cimarosa´s baroque opera La Cleopatra combined with Stravinsky´s Oedipus Rex as well as Tchaikovsky´s Queen of Spades and Mazeppa. Valery Gergiev also conducted two orchestra concerts with music by Stravinsky, Cerha, Prokoviev, Shostakovich and Britten. The Austrian pianist Markus Schirmer made his first concert appearance with Maestro Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra. The reactions from both audience and media were unanimous. All in all, over 14.000 people attended the Mariinsky shows and discovered a precious Russian repertoire which is partly still nearly unknown in Central and Western Europe.

24 - 26 April: Gala performances of the Mariinsky Ballet at the Frankfurt Opera

28 April – 3 May: Guest performance of the Mariinsky Ballet at the Lowry Manchester

July: Mariinsky Ballet in Graz

After the Mariinsky Opera had spoilt the Graz audience earlier in 2003, the Mariinsky Ballet whipped up unforgettable ballet evenings at the Graz Opera with Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, Jewels and Don Quixote.

September: Andrian Fadeyev´s stage debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin with Romeo and Juliet

The rich and versatile programme ranged from Russian repertoire to Ludwig van Beethoven and Anton Bruckner. Solo performances were made by Vadim Repin (violin) and Alexander Toradze (piano).
